06/12/2013 - Five Rails Named All-Conference

The Lake Superior Conference recently selected its annual All-Conference Team for the 2013 season. Seniors Jimmy Merling and Ben Nelson were named to the First Team, senior Paul Hegstrom and junior Joe Carter were named to the Second Team, and junior Evan Scherber was named Honorable Mention.

 

Merling batted .322 (19 for 59). He led the Rails in five statistical categories in 2013: 20 runs, five doubles, one triple, 11 stolen bases, and .441 slugging percentage. A Second Team All-Conference selection in 2012, he is the PHS all-time career leader in games (91), plate appearances (342), at bats (284), runs (112), hits (102), stolen bases (68), and times on base (151).

 

Nelson batted .333 (20 for 60). He led the 2013 Rails in games (18, tied with three others), plate appearances (69), at bats (60), and tied Evan Scherber for the team lead in hits (20). Nelson was also 2-0 with a 0.00 ERA in two pitching appearances. A Second Team All-Conference pick in 2012, he is the third all-time winningest pitcher in PHS history, with 16 career wins. He is also third all-time at PHS for career games started (23) and innings pitched (152.0).

 

Hegstrom batted .298 (17 for 57). He led the Rails with 17 RBI in 2013. Hegstrom was 2-1 with a 3.91 ERA in three pitching appearances.

 

Carter batted .387 (12 for 31).

 

Scherber led the Rails in batting, at .400 (20 for 50). He also led the Rails in 2013 in games (18, tied with three others), hits (20, tied with Ben Nelson), and on base percentage (.530).
