05/29/2014 - Two PHS Records Set in 2014

Two Proctor High School baseball records for individual players were broken in 2014 -- one single-season and one career -- both previous records had been on the books for many years.

Matt Morris established a new school single-season pitching record for the ratio of strikeouts per walks allowed (K/BB), at 6.40. The previous record of 6.07 was set by Dale Nikko in 1976, 38 years ago. Morris had 32 strikeouts compared to five walks allowed in 34 and 2/3 innings pitched (IP). Nikko, a 1978 graduate, had 91 strikeouts and 15 walks allowed in 87 and 2/3 IP in 1976, the year his pitching heroics led the Rails to their first state tournament appearance. Morris averaged 1.01 walks per seven IP (BB/7), good for second-place in school history behind Ben Nelson's 0.85 BB/7 in 2011.

Conversely, the other school record, a career batting record for the ratio of walks per strikeouts (BB/K), lasted 27 years until Evan Scherber, a senior in 2014, broke it. Scherber had 48 career walks and 18 career strikeouts, a 2.72 BB/K ratio. The previous record of 2.10 BB/K was held by 1987 graduate Mark Slattengren. Slattengren had 65 walks and 31 strikeouts in his prep career. His 65 walks is still the school record, and he also still holds the school's single-season record of 32 walks, set in 1986.
