06/28/2024 - Jake Malec Elected to Proctor Baseball Hall of Fame

Jake Malec has been elected to the Proctor Baseball Hall of Fame. Chosen by the 2024 Rails baseball team's seniors, he is the sixth of the one-a-year 21st century players to gain induction.

He will be inducted during the 2025 Proctor Baseball banquet. Other 2025 inductees, from the Golden Days Era (1947-1969) and the Modern Baseball Era (1970-1990), will be announced in October on the date of Game 1 of the 2024 World Series.

Malec played varsity baseball for Proctor as a catcher from 2012-16. He was named All-State in 2016, and also selected as a Play Ball! Minnesota All-Star in 2016. He was named to the Duluth News Tribune All-Area Team, the All-Lake Superior Conference First Team, and the All-Section 7AA Team in both his junior and senior years. He is Proctor's all-time leader in games played (102) and times on base (152). He ranks second in runs scored (82), plate appearances (337), and at bats (275); and third in hits (95), triples (nine), and consecutive games hitting (14). He compiled a .345 career batting average and participated in two state tournaments (2012 and 2016).

He played for North Dakota State (NDSU) as an outfielder/first baseman from 2017-21. He is the third Proctor athlete to play NCAA Divison I baseball, following Ted Downs (PHS '39), who played for Wisconsin, and Joe Lane (PHS '62), who played for Minnesota. He set NDSU single-season records for at-bats (247) and games played (61) in 2021 and finished his career eighth in stolen bases with 35. He batted .320 with nine home runs in 2021 and .268 with 11 home runs in his career. He earned these awards at NDSU:

He played summer collegiate baseball for the Dodge City A's and Duluth Huskies (2017); Hub City Hotshots [Aberdeen, South Dakota] (2018); and Lakeshore Chinooks [Mequon, Wisconsin] (2019).

Malec played three seasons of professional baseball, 2021-23, for the Great Falls Voyagers in the independent Pioneer League. He batted .277 with 162 hits, 23 doubles, two triples, six home runs, 64 RBI, and 38 stolen bases in 154 games in his pro career.

He has worked as a coach/instructor at Connecticut Sports Performance and as an assistant coach at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Connecticut, and the University of Minnesota Duluth.
