NASHWAUK, Minn. -- Virginia defeated Proctor in the first round of the Section 7AA Playoffs at Nashwauk by a score of 2-1, ending the Rails' season. The game was dominated by the teams' starting pitchers, Virginia's Jeremy Katz and Proctor's Matt Morris, who both hurled complete game gems. Katz tossed a two-hitter while striking out 10 batters compared to allowing one walk; Proctor's run was unearned. Morris (2-2 W-L, 4.44 ERA) countered with one earned run on eight hits. He had seven strikeouts and no walks. In an ironic twist, both pitchers were the starters in Proctor's 25-10 victory at Virginia on April 28.

Katz's RBI single scored Riley Wilson for the go-ahead run in the top of the fifth inning.

Ryan Prout singled with two outs in the second inning and scored on Bryce Negen's RBI triple to put Virginia ahead 1-0 in the top of the second inning. Nathan Carlson scored on Joe Carter's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the second for Proctor's run.

Tom Osteragaard and Kyle Maki had two hits apiece for the Blue Devils. Evan Scherber and Cody Lewis had Proctor's hits. Scherber concluded his prep career with 80 hits, third on Proctor's career hits list.

Virginia snapped a six-game losing streak in its series against Proctor; the last win was on April 27, 2009. The Blue Devils advanced to face Duluth Marshall in the second round of the playoffs, also at Nashwauk, a 6-1 defeat. They now play against Two Harbors at Proctor on Thurs., May 29, at 11:30 a.m. Virginia is now 10-8.

Proctor finished the season with an overall record of 6-9.
