Superior Senior won its first game in two tries and handed winless Proctor its fourth straight loss by taking a 4-3 decision at Proctor.

Tim Bouvine pitched a four-hitter for the Spartans, striking out six and walking only three in going the distance. Denny Gulbranson, just a freshman, allowed only six hits and fanned four, but he gave up four [sic] walks.

Rick Mueller knocked in the winning run for Superior with a double in the seventh inning.

 

Rail nine can't win for losing

History repeated itself as the Rails lost their third [sic] close game to the Spartans on the Rails' field. Proctor scored a run in the first on Jeff Merling's single, stolen base and a single by Mike Hudspith. Superior took the lead by scoring two runs in the second and one in the third. In the fifth, Proctor tied the score. Joe Gaboury was hit by a pitch and Dan Seguin bunted safely with two strikes on him. Gaboury scored on a throwing error and Jay Nelson also scored on another error. Superior won the game by scoring a run in the seventh as the first two batters doubled.

SSHS Nine Triumps at Proctor

PROCTOR, Minn. -- (Special) -- The Superior Senior High nine copped its first win of the year by nipping Proctor High's Rails, 4-3, Wednesday afternoon at Proctor, Minn.

The Spartans tallied the winning run in the last inning with Rick Mueller's single driving home the tally. Randy Johnson doubled before Mueller's hit to right field.

Tim Bouvine, Superior pitcher, held the Rails to four hits with Jeff Merling getting two of them. The Spartans slammed seven hits off the slants of Denny Gulbranson with Johnson going three-for-three and Scott Hendrickson getting two safeties.

Proctor took a 1-0 lead in the first inning as Merling singled, stole second base and tallied on Mike Hudspith's single.

The other two Rail runs came in the fifth inning on a hit batsman to Joe Gaboury, a single by Dan Seguin and a fielder's choice before a pair of SSHS errors allowed the tallies to score.

Superior plated a pair of runs in the second inning and one in the third before Proctor tied it at 3-3 in the fifth.

In the second, Mike Susens walked, stole second base and was sacrificed to third by Bouvine. Jim Ross walked and Todd Florey cracked a double to score two runs.

In the third, Hendrickson singled, stole second and came home on Johnson's single.

Bouvine fanned six men and walked four while Gulbranson fanned six and walked eight [sic].

Superior, 1-1, will travel to Babbitt, Minn., on Saturday.
