Northwestern Drops Twin Bill

Proctor, Minn., High took a non-conference doubleheader from Northwestern High Saturday afternoon at Lake Nebagamon.

The Rails won the opener, 10-7, and the night cap, 8-5.

Proctor outhit Northwestern by 13-2 in the first game with Denny Gulbranson as the winning pitcher and Tracey Hildebrandt as the loser. Mike Hudspith and Ken Elnes each had three hits for the winners and Jay Nelson two. Dan Esselstrom clubbed a three-run homer for the Tigers and Mark Erickson had the other safety.

Each team had nine hits in the second game with Dale Nikko as the winning pitcher and Mike Erickson the loser.

Joe Gaboury and Elnes each had two hits for the winners while Nikko clubbed a two-run homer and Cliff Grover a solo homer.

Mark Erickson had two hits for the losers, including a two-run homer, and had three runs-batted-in. Don Ronkainen added a two-run homer.

Northwestern, 3-5 on the year, played Spooner in Heart of the North Conference action Monday afternoon at Lake Nebagamon.

Rail 9 takes twin bill for first wins

RAILS 10, NORTHWESTERN 5

The Rails won their first two games of the season by sweeping a twin bill with Northwestern of Maple at Lake Nebagamon, Wis.

In the first game the Rails scored six runs in the first three innings and held on to win. Mike Hudspith led Proctor with three hits and three runs batted in. Ken Elnes knocked in two runs with three hits and Jon Nelson and Jay Nelson each had two hits to lead the Rails' 13-hit attack. Denny Gulbranson was the winning pitcher with last inning relief help from Dale Nikko.
