Hunters win crucial LSC game

Mark Daniels' winning hit and John Engen's 13 strikeouts gave Denfeld an eight-inning 4-3 victory over Proctor in baseball Wednesday among the two favorites in the Lake Superior Conference title race.

Daniels' hit came after Jeff Conito had singled.

Proctor had taken a 2-0 lead in the first inning on a pair of walks and two hits by John Baublitz and Mike Grover. Denfeld fought back to tie in the third. The singling Wade Boyat scored on an error and then Dave Jones brought Steve Kurtovich home on a suicide squeeze bunt.

The Hunters went ahead 3-2 in the top of the seventh before the Rails rallied on Jay Nelson's hit to knock in Tim Norton, who had also singled.

Engen went the distance for the victory, allowing eight hits and four walks. Losing pitcher Dale Nikko fanned six, allowed seven hits and no walks.
