Hibbing's Fredrickson foils double no-hitter
Duluth News Tribune, May 1, 1982

HIBBING -- Tom Fredrickson's two-out, bases-loaded single in the bottom of the seventh inning ended a double no-hitter and allowed Hibbing to down Proctor 1-0 in a non-conference high school baseball game.

Angelo Fraboni, who struck out eight and walked three, got the no-hitter for the Bluejackets, 5-1.

Reliever Ray Miles, who took over for Jay Anderson in the seventh inning, took the loss for the Rails. Anderson had struck out five and walked seven through six hitless innings. Proctor drops to 3-2.

The Bluejackets threatened in the fifth inning, advancing three baserunners as far as third base but had two runners cut down at the plate when the Rails snuffed squeeze plays.

Hibbing left eight runners on base. Proctor stranded two.

Dave Persson opened the bottom of the seventh with a walk. Joe Kapla advanced Persson and also reached safely with a bunt. Miles intentionally walked Emanuel to load the bases with one out and retired Sam Bjellos on a pop-up.

Fredrickson, a shortstop, ripped the next pitch to deep center field to drive in Persson.

Tom Fredrickson picked a good time to get the first hit by a Hibbing High School baseball player at Bennett Park on Friday.

The Jackets, who on April 23 had been no-hit by Bemidji's Bryan Hickerson in their home opener, were blanked through six innings by Proctor's Jay Anderson while Hibbing's Angelo Fraboni was building a no-hitter of his own.

Rails reliever Ray Miles walked the first Jacket batter he faced in the bottom of the seventh, Dave Persson, who advanced to third on bunts by Joe Kapla and Bob Kern.

Kapla made it on base on a fielder's choice, and Kern was thrown out at first. With one gone Proctor issued an intentional walk to Brad Emanuel, and then Sam Bjellos popped out to the catcher.

With the bases loaded, Fredrickson ripped a Miles fastball over the center fielder's head that rolled all the way to the fence and scored Persson with the only run of the game.

"Oh, what a game. What a great ball game," said Hibbing Coach Matt Bergan, whose team upped its record to 5-1 while Proctor falls to 3-2. "That's the first hit by us on our own field."

"I can't understand why we're not hitting. We nail the ball in practice," said Assistant Coach Dan Bergan. "But, we can play defense with anybody."

Fraboni, a senior right-hander for the Jackets, allowed just four Proctor runners on base in seven innings, and two of them were gunned down by catcher Brad Emmanuel as they tried to steal second.

The first 11 Rails were retired in order by Fraboni, and then the 12th reached first on the only Hibbing error of the game. But Emanuel wiped the slate clean by firing a perfect strike to shortstop Fredrickson to nail the stealing Tony Dincau.

Fraboni struck out nine and walked three. He issued a base on balls in each of the last three frames, but stranded Craig Pionk on third in the fifth, saw Emanuel wipe out pinch-runner Scott St. Germaine at second in the sixth, and left Anderson on first in the seventh.

Hibbing had several chances to score earlier in the game, as Anderson walked five and his teammates committed three errors behind him.

Fredrickson made it to third on a walk, passed ball, and a steal in the second inning, but he was put out at home when a walking Jim Kochevar purposefully got caught in a run-down between first and second to draw attention away from the runner at third.

But Proctor first baseman Todd Schramm played it well, and made his throw to the plate in time to get Fredrickson for the third out.

Hibbing, which stranded 11 runners in the game, left two on in the third after Dave Persson and Joe Kapla reached base on back-to-back throwing errors by the shortstop and pitcher with one out. The threat ended with a pop-up and a grounder.

With two out in the fourth, DH Chris Church was hit by a pitch. He advanced to second on a walk to Kochevar, and made third on a passed ball. But the Rails got the third out on a grounder.

Sam Bjellos walked and Fredrickson gained the bases on a throwing error with none out in the sixth. Bjellos was erased at third on a grounder, and then Kochevar reached on a bunt.

Fredrickson was out at home on a safety squeeze, and Anderson got the third out on strikes to end the sixth.

Fraboni made the second and third batters in the Proctor order to ground out in the top of the seventh, and after walking clean-up hitter Anderson he struck out the next man to set up Fredrickson's heorics in the bottom of the stanza.

Hibbing is scheduled to continue its season on Tuesday, hosting Brainerd at 4:30 p.m. in Bennett Park.
