Late, late rally gives Rails win over Moose Lake

It took 20 outs for the Proctor Rails baseball team to break open a ball game that was almost lost on Monday on a beautiful day in Moose Lake.

Rebels pitcher Nate Zuk had the Rails hitters off balance all day as he allowed only three hits in 6 2/3 innings of work. In the top of the seventh inning, the Rails were down to their last out, trailing 3-2, when junior Kyle Cotrell drew a walk and was followed by a single from senior Drew Scherber and an error off the bat of sophomore Charlie Habermann to tie the score. With men on second and third, senior Jon Podgornik gave the Rails the lead with a two-run single and from there the flood gates opened with the Rails scoring a total of eight runs in the inning and winning the game by a score of 10-3.

Defensively, the Rails had another strong pitching performance with junior Kevin Schubert going a complete game and allowing only seven hits while striking out five batters. At the hot corner, senior Jon Kent again showed his abilities with the glove with numerous outstanding defensive plays.

With the win, the Rails improve to 2-0 on the year and will face the Mesabi East Giants on Thursday in their 2007 home opener at Egerdahl Field.
