DULUTH -- Ryan McCarthy and Nick Nylund had four hits apiece as Proctor defeated Marshall 14-2 in a Lake Superior Conference baseball game at Bulldog Park in Duluth. The game was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run rule. Proctor scored eight runs in the top of the first inning and added six more runs in the fourth inning. The Rails had 16 hits.
 
Nylund had two doubles and three RBIs. McCarthy added two runs scored and two RBIs.
 
Jimmy Merling had two hits, three runs scored, two RBIs, and four stolen bases.
 
Alex Oachs (3-0, 2.00 ERA) earned the complete game win. He allowed one earned run on six hits, two walks, and two hit batsmen. He had one strikeout.
 
Proctor is 11-0 overall and 4-0 in Lake Superior Conference games. The Rails will host Hermantown at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday at Terry Egerdahl Memorial Field.

Rails Notes: Jimmy Merling tied a state record with three stolen bases in one inning. He is the fifth player to achieve the feat. The last to swipe three bases in an inning was Tyler Erzar of Deer River against Aitkin in 2009... Alex Oachs became the third pitcher in PHS history to record 20 career games started. He trails Dale Nikko (1975-78), 27, and Dan Carlson (2003-06), 23, on the PHS all-time list.
