Superior, Proctor advance in Northland Tournament

Superior, Proctor, Virginia and Forest Lake won quarterfinal games Friday to advance in the Northland high school baseball tournament.

George Hansen hit a three-run home run and Josh Edwards added a two-run shot as Superior defeated host Cloquet 9-1. Jamie Johnson was the winning pitcher for the Spartans, who will face Forest Lake in today's 1:30 p.m. semifinal. The Rangers, Minnesota's No. 2 rated Class AA team, rallied for four runs in the bottom of the seventh to defeat Duluth East 12-11.

Brent Bordson scored on a sacrifice fly by Kelly Hanna in the top of the ninth inning as host Proctor edged Mahtomedi 8-7. Hanna and Brian DeDominces each had two hits and Scott McLeod pitched 1 1/3 innings of relief for the win. Jeff Kath hit two home runs and Todd George hit a three-run homer in the bottom of the seventh to send the game into extra innings.

The Rails will face Virginia, which defeated Duluth Denfeld 10-4 behind three hits and three RBIs by Ryan Skubic. Dan DeSanto had a two-run double for the Hunters, who stranded 13 runners.

In today's 11 a.m. consolation games, Duluth East is at Cloquet and Denfeld faces Mahtomedi at Proctor.
