Hardball season finally moves into full swing

Injury sidelines one of Proctor's top players

Last week, baseball finally managed to move ahead.

Proctor 5, St. Agnes 3

The Rails first win was [at] Centennial, a north metro area suburb, which came in the final game of the tournament against St. Agnes, a small private school that hails from St. Paul. The Rails turned in the 5-3 win with a well-rounded attack pacing the scoring.

Senior Scott Wojtysiak went one-for-three at the plate, scored a run, and stole two bases, which was most impressive as he played the entire game with a broken nose. The Rails senior had made a last-minute position change heading into the weekend action because starting shortstop Brayden Ward suffered a broken hand forcing him from the lineup for the remainder of the season. In his first game as starting shortstop, Wojtysaik was chasing a short fly ball when he collided with the Proctor left fielder. Wojtysiak came away with a broken nose. He went on to finish that first game and also played the full seven innings of the St. Agnes game.

[Coach] Rohweder commented later, "He (Wojtysiak) played great for us this weekend. He's a tough competitor who will not give up and will not quit."

On the mound for the Rails facing St. Agnes was Jake Vanderscheuren, who went the full seven innings for the team's first win of the season. Proctor plated runs in the first three innings, and mustered the defense needed to hold off the Aggies for the victory.

Mike Pehl had an impressive day on offense as the slugger aced two hits in three trips to the plate, stole two bases, and scored for Proctor. Erik Carlson hit safely once in his two at bats, safely stole a base, and scored a run for the Rails. Robby Hansen went two-for-two at the plate, scored for his team, and racked up two RBI's for Proctor. Kyle Lindstrom added to the offensive attack with one hit in three at bats, scored, and drove in a run with his solo hit.
