The Grand Rapids High School baseball team split a pair of games at Legion Field Thursday, losing to Proctor by a 10-8 score in eight innings and then turning on the power to shut out the Greenway Raiders 12-0 in five innings in an evening game.

Grand Rapids jumped out to a 1-0 lead against Proctor in the first inning when catcher Tim Gillson led off the game with a walk. Pinch runner Brent Magnuson stole second base and advanced to third on a wild pitch. He scored on a single from first baseman Lance Kuschel.

The game then turned into a pitching duel between Grand Rapids senior righthander David Nikkel and Proctor's Nik Watkins. Proctor changed that with four runs in the fourth inning. Four walks by Nikkel, two singles and a big three-run home run by Aaron Strom put the Rails ahead 4-1.

The Thunderhawks fought back with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth. Magnuson, pinch running for Gillson, who had walked, scored on a bases-loaded walk to David Rajala while pinch runner Andy Radermacher, running for Nikkel who had singled, scored on a sacrifice fly to the wall by Gary Dick.

Grand Rapids tied the game at 4-4 in the bottom of the sixth when Brian Harden led off with a walk off relief pitcher Aaron Slattengren, was sacrificed to second and eventually scored on a single from Kuschel.

Proctor scored one run in the top of the seventh as Jay Dardis singled and scored on a single by Watkins.

The Thunderhawks tied the game in dramatic fashion in the bottom of the seventh. Dick led off with a single and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly from Mike Gebhart.

In the eighth inning, Proctor scored five runs off Nikkel to take a 10-5 advantage. Adrian Gonzalez had a run-scoring double and Watkins cracked a three-run home run.

Grand Rapids was able to score three runs in its half of the eighth inning but it wasn't enough. Kuschel had an RBI double in the inning while Dick crushed a two-run home run. ...
