Zach Gunderson and Luke Nordquist combined on a no-hitter as Proctor won, 11-1, in a non-conference baseball game at Moose Lake on Tues., May 2. The game was shortened to five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Gunderson (1-1 W-L, 0.70 ERA) earned the win by pitching the first four innings. He allowed zero runs on one walk and had five strikeouts. Nordquist pitched the final inning. He allowed one run on one walk with two strikeouts.

Proctor plated three runs in the top of the first inning. Reid Morin and Nordquist drew back-to-back walks to start the game. With Ricky Steel in as a courtesy runner for Morin, the catcher, both runners advanced a base on a passed ball before they scored on a two-RBI double by John Aase. Aase then stole third and scored on an RBI single by Bryce Huffman.

Three more Rails runs came across the plate in the second inning. Jordan Linder led off with a single. Morin singled, sending Linder to third. Nordquist's RBI single drove in Linder, and later in the inning a two-RBI single with two outs by Gunderson scored Nordquist and Aase.

Proctor went up 7-0 with one run in the third. Linder singled with one out, stole second, and scored on Aase's single with two outs.

ML-WR starting pitcher Danny Whited worked into the fourth, which turned out to be a four-run inning for Proctor. Whited faced three batters in the fourth and was replaced by Mark Fossum with one out. Whited, the losing pitcher, allowed nine runs (six earned) on 10 hits and four walks. He had three strikeouts.

In the Rails' fourth, Gunderson led off by reaching on an error. Ben Harnell entered as a courtesy runner for Gunderson and took second on a wild pitch. Blake Koski's ground out sent Harnell to third and Harnell scored on a passed ball. Ryan Lear walked with one out, and Linder walked with two outs before Morin hit a two-run double, plating Lear from second and Linder from first. Steel ran for Morin and took third on a wild pitch and scored the final run of the game on a passed ball.

Morin was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBI. Nordquist was 1-for-3 with two runs and an RBI. Aase was 2-for-4 with a double, two runs, and three RBI. Huffman was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Gunderson was 2-for-3 with two RBI. Linder was 2-for-2 with three runs.

Rails Notes

The no-hitter is the 17th in school history. The last one was by Aase against Eveleth-Gilbert on April 15, 2016...Aase hit the 19th double of his prep career. He is now tied with Ian Scherber (PHS '12) for the most career doubles in school history...Aase became the 11th known Rails player to reach 200 career at bats...Aase became the 10th known Rails player to reach 50 career singles...Reid Morin became the 16th known Rails player to reach 30 career walks. He now 31 and is 14th on the all-time list.
