Rails Go 1-2 in Hibbing Tournament

By Max Mercy

HIBBING -- Proctor competed in the four-team Mike Bugliosi Wood Bat Classic in Hibbing on May 20 and 21. The Rails defeated Cloquet, 10-7, on Friday before falling to the host Bluejackets, 4-1, and Roseau, 7-0, on Saturday. The Roseau game was determined to be a five-inning game before play started in an attempt to get the tournament's schedule back on track after two rain delays.

Proctor 10, Cloquet 7

Proctor scored three runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 7-7 tie and Ryan Schubitzke pitched a scoreless seventh for the save as the Rails took their second Lake Superior Conference victory over the Lumberjacks this season. In the sixth, Blake Imhoff's RBI single plated Tanner Ross for the go-ahead run before Sam Johnson hit into an RBI fielder's choice for the ninth run and Nolan McLeod walked with the bases loaded for the final tally. Ross (1-0, 1.91 ERA) earned the win in relief of starter Carson Pavlowich. Ross worked two and two-thirds innings and allowed one run (unearned) on two hits and a walk with one strikeout. Ethan CarterTanner Olson, and Nick Terhaar scored two runs apiece while McLeod collected two RBI. Cloquet's Kollin Bonneville was 2-for-2 with two doubles and three RBI. Losing pitcher Qwentin Bailey allowed three runs (two earned) on one hit and three walks with zero strikeouts in two innings of relief for starter Marshall Hayes. Bailey faced two batters without recording an out in the seventh. The Rails drew 12 walks off three Lumberjacks pitchers while allowing eight free passes themselves.

Hibbing 4, Proctor 1

The Bluejackets took an early lead and hung on to take the Lake Superior Conference victory. Hibbing scored three runs in the second inning and one in the third for a 4-0 lead. Nick Terhaar scored Proctor's run in the fourth. He drew a leadoff walk, advanced to second on an error, moved to third when Ryan Schubitzke reached on a error, and then scored on Hibbing's third miscue of the inning. The Rails' last ditch effort to alter the outcome fell short in the seventh. Ethan Carter walked with one out. Blake Imhoff reached on a fielder's choice error which advanced Carter to second base. Hibbing then replaced its starting and winning pitcher, Luke Nelson, in favor of reliever Beau Frider. Dylan Davidson drew a walk to load the bases, but Frider then induced a strikeout and a groundout to pick up the save. Nelson allowed one run (unearned) on four hits and five walks with four strikeouts in six and one-third innings. Grant Walker (1-3, 3.92 ERA) was the tough-luck losing pitcher. He tossed a complete game and allowed one earned run on seven hits and one walk with seven strikeouts. Brayden Boyer had two hits and a run for Hibbing. Rain and snow delayed the start of the game and another rain delay occurred during play.

Roseau 7, Proctor 0 (5 innings)

Roseau scored two runs in the first, two runs in the second, and three runs in the third en route to the five-inning victory. The Rams' Gavin Jensen worked four innings for the win and releiver Cody Otto tossed the fifth frame to complete the shutout. Jensen allowed four hits and two walks with one strikeout. Otto had one walk and two strikeouts. Brady Demars hit a two-RBI single in the third that plated the final two runs. Nick Terhaar (3-2, 1.84 ERA) took the loss. He allowed four runs (two earned) on two hits and five walks with three strikeouts in two innings. Roseau managed five hits but drew seven walks off Proctor's three pitchers.

Proctor, now 9-6, is at home against Hermantown on Monday, May 23.
