06/01/2014 - Scherber, Wojtysiak in State All-Star Series

by Max Mercy

Evan Scherber, a senior, has been selected to participate in the Play Ball! Minnesota High School Baseball Series, to be played June 20 and 21 at Chaska. Scherber was chosen for the North team. His coaches for the series are Ely's Frank Ivancich, Duluth East's John Rudolph, and his own coach, Proctor's Kyle Wojtysiak.

Scherber is the third Rails player to participate in the series, formerly known as the Lions All-Star Series, joining Justin Scanlon (2011) and Ben Nelson (2013) on the list. Scherber concluded his prep career as Proctor's all-time leader in walks per strikeouts, with a ratio of 2.72. He ranks second in school history in singles (71) and lowest strikeout percent (7.7), third in hits (80), walks (49), and times on base (131), fourth in games (78), plate appearances (294), at bats (235), and runs batted in (53), and seventh in total bases (89). His career .453 on base percentage and .340 batting average both rank eighth all-time at PHS. Finally, his 48 career runs scored is tied for ninth. He is undecided on which college he will attend in the fall, but is planning on playing baseball.

Wojtysiak was named to the coaching staff of the North squad. In five seasons at the helm, Wojtysiak has guided the Rails to a third-place championship at the 2012 state tournament, Section 7AA championships in 2011 and 2012, a Lake Superior Conference championship in 2011, and four Section 7AA Playoffs Final Four appearances. His career record is 73-34, a .682 win percentage.

The other players from Section 7A, 7AA, and 7AA on the North team are Chris Olson (Duluth East), Jackson Gessell (Grand Rapids), Jake Johnson (Cambridge), Jake Turner (Duluth East), Louis Gerzin (Ely), and Matt Hesselquist (Chisago Lakes).
