P.H.S. Loses to Central in Baseball Tournament

After copping the first round game from Esko Monday in the District 26 baseball tournament, Proctor high school was knocked out of the running Tuesday by Central, 8-2, in another game played at Esko.
Behind the three-hit hurling of Central's Vail, the Trojans scored eight runs off Larry LeBlanc in the first three innings of the game. Relief pitcher Wayne Johanson held Central scoreless the remainder of the game, but Proctor was unable to shove over more runs. Proctor committed three errors, Central two.

The Proctor High school baseball team played only two games this year, winning one and losing one, but will have fine material in years to come.

The starting line-up consisted of Larry LeBlanc, Bob Hessevick, Jim Norton, Wayne Sundstrom, Duane Swenson, Jim Cleary, Wayne Johanson, [Jack Hulten] and [Bob Gnotta]. Of these, only Sundstrom, Swenson, and Johanson have graduated.

In their first game this year the Rails defeated Esko to the tune of 4-2. Johanson pitched a nice game for Proctor, letting up only five hits while striking out 12 and walking six.

Larry LeBlanc singled in the fourth inning, proving the big blow of the game as he drove in two runs. In the first inning Proctor picked up one run on two hits. Jim Norton singled in Bob Hessevick after the latter had also collected a base single.

Proctor's big inning, the fourth, was opened when Jim Cleary was safe on the shortstop's error. Koivisto, the Esko pitcher, then walked Johanson and Hulten to load the bases and hit [Bob Gnotta] to force in a run. LeBlanc promptly followed with his base hit to wind up the afternoon's scoring for Proctor.

Esko gathered but five hits off Johanson as he held them in check throughout the game. Esko picked up one run in the sixth when Koivisto singled, stole second, advanced to third on a wild pitch and was ushered home on a passed ball. They scored again in the seventh when Heikenen went to first on a fielder's choice, went to third on a passed ball and was singled home by Davidson. The win game Proctor the right to meet Central in the semifinals.

Proctor opened the first inning with two runs. They were scored when Hessevick walked, Cleary promptly singled and Vail loaded the bases when he hit Norton. LeBlanc once again came through with a sharp single to drive in Hessevick and Cleary with what proved to be Proctor's only runs. LeBlanc held the Trojans in check until the third when they picked up three runs on only one hit and turned the pitched chores over to Johanson in the fourth after letting up five runs on four hits. This rounded out the scoring for Central as Johanson held them in check the rest of the game. The final score was 8-2, Central's favor.

Vail was outstanding on the hill for Central as he struck out 16 [sic] Proctor batsmen while walking only three. LeBlanc and Johanson, on the other hand, combined efforts to strike out seven and walk five.
