Cloquet Nine Beats Proctor

The Cloquet high school baseball team yesterday defeated Proctor's Rails in a free-hitting District 26 contest, 6-5, at the losers' field. The Rails got 10 hits off pitcher Don Siiter and the Lumberjacks rapped pitcher Ronnie Ron Main for 11 safeties.

Proctor, Cloquet Baseball Teams Play Two Games

The Proctor high school baseball team lost its second game of the year, 6-5, to Cloquet last Friday evening at the Rails' diamond.

The Lumberjacks scored six runs in the first four innings to take a commanding lead, but the Rails kept narrowing the margin by getting runs in the third, fifth, and sixth innings. The Rails really came alive in the last inning by scoring two runs, and it looked as though they might get another, but the next two men grounded out.

Larry Brett led the Rails in hits getting three safeties. Ron Main, the losing pitcher, bagged a triple and a single to his credit.

The Rails traveled to Cloquet on Wednesday, June 15, to play what proved to be the longest game of the year. The two teams battled in a scoreless tie until the tenth inning when the Rails came to life to score three runs on one hit, two walks and an error. The Lumberjacks were not to be out done, however, as they also scored three runs in the tenth on one hit, two walks and two errors.

The game was called at that point because of darkness by Umpire Elmer Gorham. Gorham stated that the game would have to be continued at a later date on the Lumberjacks' field.
