Greyhounds Clinch Big 9 Baseball Title

Duluth East captured the Big Nine Conference baseball championship Thursday when it outlasted Proctor, 9-7, at Wheeler Field.

The Greyhounds won the title with a 6-1 record, the only loss coming at the hands of Cloquet in the first game of the schedule.

East scored all its runs in the first two innings, two in the first and seven in the second. Joe Lane took over on the Proctor mound in the second inning and held the Greyhounds scoreless in the rest of the way.

East's first-inning scores came on Jeff Carson's home run that drove in Bob Hill, who got on base as a hit batter.

Corey Lomen's two-run single, a sacrifice fly by Hill and Carson's double were the key blows for East in the second inning. Winning pitcher was Gary Maki, who scattered seven Proctor hits...
