Silver Bay, East Nines Triumph

Silver Bay and Duluth East scrambled the Big Ten Conference high school baseball standings Tuesday, knocking previous co-leader Proctor and Cloquet into a second-place tie.

The Mariners, led by a top pitching effort by John Cox, stymied Proctor 3-1 at Silver Bay...

...Thus, Silver Bay moved into a virtual first-place knot with Denfeld, which whipped Two Harbors 7-0. The Mariners are now 4-2, the Hunters 2-1. Proctor and Cloquet are both 3-2...

...Silver Bay's Cox allowed Proctor just two hits and had a no-hitter going until the fifth inning. A single by Gary Egerdahl and John Yount's follow-up double spiked the no-hit bid and plated the Rails' run.

Cox walked five batters -- all in the first three innings. He struck out nine.

Rich Cook laced three singles and drove in two runs to power the Mariners. Bill Langley batted in the other run...
