Agate Nine Win First Loop Game
Two Harbors Chronicle & Times, May 2, 1968

Torrid base running, strong hitting, and the firm pitching of Steve McInerney was the combination used by [the] Two Harbors High School baseball team to sweep to a 13-2 victory in its conference opener at Proctor Tuesday night. The victory came on the heels of two defeats this past weekend at the hand of Hinckley and Pine City by 6-2 and 4-0 scores, respectively.

Admittedly, on the southward swing the Agates were sluggish and not playing the baseball that they were capable of playing; however, Tuesday all of the ingredients of a fine team were blended together.

McInerney, with the game still within Proctor's reach, closed the door twice with strikeouts in the second and third innings. Despite seven Proctor hits and five walks, after the Agates came up with a run in the third and five in the fourth, McInerney was in complete control. The Agates, led by the hitting of Steve Salakka, Paul Peterson, and Jim Hulisky, jacked out 12 hits. What was more important, however, was the hustle and heads-up play on the bases.

The Agates stole nine bases and caused Proctor to make six errors, four of them on throws. In the fourth inning, with the score 1 to 0 in favor of Two Harbors, Jim Holisky singled and stole second, and with the third baseman not expecting a bunt, stole third. After Peterson and Ken Larson walked, Steve Salakka singled to center to score two. With one out Ohlund bunted and Steve Salakka, who by this time had moved to third on a stolen base and a passed ball, slid under the tag at home.

In the seventh the Agates took the benefit of two Proctor errors, a hit batsman, and four hits highlighted by Jim Holisky's double, to score five runs and finish the game with a 13 to 2 win. ...
