Wildcats, Trojans Defeat Hilltoppers

...And in three local contests, Morgan Park and Central stopped Cathedral 2-1 and 6-3 in separate games at Wade Stadium, and Superior defeated Proctor 8-4...

...Superior improved its record to 4-1 at the expense of 3-1 [sic] Proctor by defeating the Rails 8-4. David Lundquist was the winning pitcher for the Spartans with late inning relief help from Lee McPherson.

Lundquist was also a leading hitter for Superior, going 2-for-2 at the plate and knocking in two runs. Teammate Paul Sanvick had a two-run double. Blaine Muckala had a pair of hits for Proctor.

Superior Nine Topples Proctor

The Superior Senior High nine managed only six hits but took advantage of 11 walks and strolled to an 8-4 win over the Proctor High Rails Monday in Superior.

The Spartans built up a 5-0 lead in the first two innings and tallied three more in the fifth for their fourth win in five starts.

Superior talled twice in the first inning as Dave Lundquist's hit tallied Mike Mattson, who had walked and Dan Morgan, who had singled.

In the second inning, Superior had two walks and an error and a double by Gary Raymond plated one run among the three scored.

There were four walks in the fifth inning and Paul Sandvick followed with a double.

Lundquist and Lee McPherson pitched for Superior, combining for seven strikeouts while walking three men. Lundquist picked up the win, his second against no losses.

He also went two-for-two at the plate and was named the Spartans' "most valuable player" in the game.

Proctor had eight hits with Blaine Muckala getting two of them. The Rails scored twice in the third inning and added a pair in the sixth.

Dave Beardsley went the route on the hill for the Rails, fanning four men.

Superior returns to action Thursday afternoon against Northwestern High at Lake Nebagamon. Morgan, who is 1-1 this year, is scheduled to pitch for the Spartans.
