Proctor and Grand Rapids got outstanding pitching performances to breeze to sub-regional baseball wins in 7AA action Tuesday, while Virginia and International Falls had to go into extra innings to come up with victories in their games...

...Proctor upset Aurora-Hoyt Lakes 9-3 on the two-hit pitching of Dale Nikko, with Nikko yielding all three runs in the first inning. The Rails also scored three runs in the first, then added two runs each in the third, fifth and seventh innings.

Proctor got a three-for-three effort from Ken Elnes at the plate to back up Nikko's pitching job. Elnes' hits included two doubles and a single, and he drove in three runs. Joe Gaboury had two hits and knocked in two runs. The Rails will now face Virginia, 6-2 victor over Two Harbors, in the sub-Region 3 finals at 4:30 p.m. Thursday in Virginia.

Jim Jetland tossed a one-hitter for Rapids in a 13-0 win over Greenway of Coleraine. Ron Potter got the only hit off Jetland in the fourth inning. That and a walk were the only blemishes on Jetland's stats. He faced 17 batters in the five-inning contest. Steve Iwasko provided [Grand Rapids] with [its] plate punch with four hits, including a homer, and five RBI. Larry Goodrie had a solo homer for Rapids...

...Mark Anderson helped himself to the pitching victory in Virginia's eight-inning win over Two Harbors when he slammed a two-run double, breaking a 2-2 tie. Two Harbors scored one run each in the third and fifth innings while Virginia got its first two runs in the third...
