Spartans Fall to Rails, 7-3
The Evening Telegram, May 16, 1979

Proctor High Rails feasted on a first-inning three-run homer and then bunched a trio of their six safeties for three more tallies in the fourth to take a 7-3 baseball win over the Superior Senior High Spartans Tuesday afternoon at the Superior Babe Ruth Field.

Proctor bolted to a 3-0 lead in the initial frame on Dan Norton's round-tripper after Mike Woods had walked and Scott Pionk had reached first base on a SSHS error.

In the fourth frame, Proctor made it 6-0 as they came up with three hits and added five walks by Superior hurler Jeff Finckler, who suffered the loss while making his first start.

In four innings, Finckler was tapped for six runs on five hits. He fanned six men and walked five. Steve Hendry finished. He allowed one run on one hit while fanning four and walking the same number.

Superior got on the scoreboard in the fifth frame, as John Bouvine tripled and scored on Tom Johnson's sacrifice fly. In the sixth frame, Hendry doubled and Finckler followed with a homer. Proctor ended the scoring with a run in the same frame.

Nik Peterson, Proctor pitcher, set down SSHS on five hits. He fanned five men and walked just one.

Superior, 5-5 on the year, entertains Duluth East at 4 p.m. Thursday at the Babe Ruth Field.
