The Superior Senior High baseball team out a big feather in its cap Wednesday afternoon with a 5-1 win over the Proctor, Minn., High Rails, Lake Superior Conference champions, at Wade Stadium in Duluth.

After spotting Proctor a first-inning tally, Superior tied the score in the fourth frame and then went on to win it an inning later with a four-run barrage.

In SSHS's fourth inning, Steve Hendry walked, stole second base, and eventually scored on a pair of wild pitches. An inning later, Mike Ramer, Hendry, and Mitch Lindstrom mustered three of Superior's four hits in the game-winning assault. Hendry and Lindstrom each drove home runs with singles while the other tallies came plateward on a wild pitch and a walk with the bases loaded.

The Spartans, 9-3 in the year, also threatened in the second inning. Randy Gunderson doubled and took third base on an error but was stranded with one out.

Relief pitcher Ramer was the winner, taking his second win against no losses. He fanned five men and didn't walk any while working the last four innings. Starter Lindstrom fanned three men and didn't have a stroll in three frames. They combined on a five-hitter.

Bill Richardson and Jason Malec hurled for Proctor with Richardson as the starter and loser. They combined for six strikeouts and 10 walks.

The Rails scored when Scott Pionk singled followed by Dan Norton's triple.

The Spartans are back in action Friday at 3:30 p.m. against Duluth East at Wade Stadium. Todd Mattson, junior righthander, 2-2, is scheduled to pitche for SSHS.
