SSHS Nine Turns Back Proctor

Spotting Proctor High a run in the fourth inning, the Superior Senior High baseball team roared back with four tallies in the sixth to take a 4-1 win Wednesday afternoon at Proctor, Minn.

Winning their fifth game in a row, the Spartans are now 9-1 on the year.

Superior's sophomore righthander Paul Gidley, the winning pitcher, and Proctor's Ray Miles, the loser, each gave up just three hits.

The Rails' lone tally came on Bill Norton's solo home run and the Spartans used only one safety, a run-scoring single by Tony Bronson, in their four-run spree, but took advantage of three Proctor errors and a wild pitch. SSHS also posted four stolen bases and a walk in the inning.

Gidley, now 3-1 on the season, fanned five batters and walked one. Miles struck out 13 men and walked three.

Mark Nordness and Dan Archambeau had the only other hits for the winners.

The Spartans had one error and the Rails three.

Superior returns to action Friday afternoon in a makup game against the Hayward High Hurricanes at Hayward. Senior righthander Todd Cooke, 4-0, is expected to pitch for the Spartans.
