Paul Gidley pitched a four-hitter, struck out 13 and hit a two-run home run to lead Superior past Proctor in a Lake Superior Conference game at Proctor.
The Spartans broke a 4-4 tie after four innings by scoring four runs in the sixth and four more in the seventh. Bill Olson led Superior's offense with four hits and three runs batted in.
Todd Johnson had two hits and Chris Frank a two-run double for the Rails, 4-7.

 

Senior High Nine Romps at Proctor

PROCTOR, Minn. -- Bidding for the Lake Superior Conference baseball championship, the Superior Senior High Spartans rolled to a 13-5 win over the Proctor High Rails Tuesday afternoon at Proctor, Minn.

The Spartans put the game out of reach with four-run sprees in the sixth and seventh frames before the Minnesotans rallied for a tally int he seventh inning.

Senior pitcher Paul Gidley remained undefeated on his fifth straight win with help from Benji Lehner, who fanned the only man he faced to end the game,

Pitching a four-hitter, Gidley fanned 12 batters but walked six.

Bill Olson paced the Spartans at the plate with four of SSHS's seven hits including a two-bagger. He drove home three runs. Gidley socked a two-run homer in the sixth inning.

Hurler Steve Makitalo went the route for the Rails. He struck out 10 batters, walked five, and hit one batsman.

Proctor was charged with six errors and Superior three.

The Spartans are 6-4 overall this year with a 6-1 conference log.

Superior was scheduled to play a non-conference makup game against the Hibbing High Blujackets at Hibbing, Minn.

SSHS Coach Ron Orlandi said he would use veteran Tom Beattie, 0-0, and newcomer Lehner on the mound.

Beattie is coming off a nine-week suspension for violating the school's athletic code.
