The Superior Senior High baseball team held off a Proctor, Minn., rally in the seventh inning and chalked up a 14-12 win in a Lake Superior Conference game Friday afternoon at the Superior Babe Ruth Field.

There were four home runs, three by SSHS, in the slugfest, along with 22 bases on balls, 15 of them off Spartans hurlers. The Spartans employed five pitchers and the Rails used two.

Proctor took a 2-0 lead in the first inning on Mark Kieren's home run after Mark Slattengren had walked.

Superior came back with four tallies in the second inning on five bases on balls, a hit batter, three stolen bases, and a passed ball.

The Spartans tallied eight runs in the third inning on four hits, including two-run homers by Rick Raymond and Mike Berry. Raymond's blow cleared the right center-field fence after Rick Hansen had strolled and Berry's clout sailed over the left field wall after Mike Retzer had walked.

Frank Bronson's two-run homer in the sixth inning iced the game for the SSHS nine, 6-3 overall and 5-3 in the conference.

Randy Hansen singled and was sacrificed to second base by Bob Stark, setting it up for Bronson, who also had a double.

The Rails scored four runs in the fifth inning on three walks and four hits, including a double by Randy Fietek.

All came off Superior starting pitcher Cory Johnson, who was relieved by Dave Myhre. Myhre walked the first batter, but fanned Fietek to end the inning.

Raymond, the third SSHS hurler, retired the Rails in order in the sixth frame, but ran into control problems in the seventh and Proctor produced four more tallies.

Raymond walked the bases full and, after a strikeout, walked two more batters. Spartan pitcher Rick Hansen walked in two runs before Dan Geegan forced a popup to end the game.

Johnson, 4-1, was the winner.

Superior entertained Duluth Denfeld-Morgan Park High in conference action Saturday morning and will face Duluth East at 4 p.m. Monday in a LSC test at the Superior Babe Ruth Field.
