PROCTOR, Minn. -- The undefeated Superior Senior High baseball team tallied seven runs in the third inning and coasted to a 12-5 win over the Proctor High Rails here Thursday.

The Spartans banged out 14 hits in their fourth straight win of the year.

Dave Garlie led the way with 3-for-3 [batting] and drove home one run. Bob Stark had two hits, including a triple, and had two RBI. Randy Hansen, Cory Johnson, and Jeff Arnovich all added two hits.

The Spartans used four pitchers with Dave Myhre going the first three innings for his third triumph. He allowed a first-inning run, two hits, and four bases on balls.

Johnson, Dan Geegan, and Trev Kavajecz were the other SSHS hurlers. Sophomore Kavajecz was the most effective. He allowed two runs, six hits, and a walk in 3 2/3 innings.

Proctor scored in the opening frame on a single by Mike Robertson, a walk to Mark Slattengren, and a single by Craig Peterson.

The Rails added two run in the fourth frame on four walks and a hit, and two in the seventh on three hits and a walk.

The Senior High runs in the third inning were the result of four hits, a base on balls, a hit batsman, and two errors. Stark and Frank Bronson tripled, Arnovich doubled, and Garlie singled.

Johnson, Randy Hansen, and Garlie had safeties to go with a hit batsman as the Spartans plated three more in the fifth inning. Garlie's third hit and two walks produced another tally in the sixth inning with the final tally coming in the seventh on singles by Rick Hansen and Johnson and Perky Hansen's double.

SSHS Coach Ron Orlandi was pleased with the Spartans' performance, especially their hitting.

"Our relief pitchers just work on control. Our relief hurlers must throw more strikes to stay out of trouble. Our base running also must improve. We let Proctor off the hook a couple of times due to poor base running," he commented.

Superior will host Duluth East in a conference game at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Babe Ruth Field.
