Cloquet earns top seed

CAMBRIDGE, Minn. -- Cloquet clinched the top south seed in the Region 7AA high school baseball tournament Thursday by beating Cambridge 8-6 in the sub-region title game.

Shawn Erickson went the distance for the Lumberjacks, allowing eight hits.

Brad Takkunen had a two-run home run for Cloquet, 14-4, and Scott Sorenson had four hits and three runs batted in. Bruce Baker added three hits and two RBI.

Cambridge also advances to the region tournament, set for next Tuesday and Wednesday at Grand Rapids.

The Lumberjacks gained the final by defeating Proctor 2-1 in 13 innings Thursday in a semifinal.

Sorenson struck out 14 Rails and allowed only four hits in pitching every inning. Chris Kindgren tossed all 13 innings for Proctor, 13-5, losing the decision when Baker scored on Dennis Rule's single in the top of the 13th.
