Superior Senior High junior southpaw Trev Kavajecz allowed only one hit and the Spartans broke the game open with a seven-run fourth inning as SSHS coasted to an 11-1 Lake Superior Conference baseball win over the Proctor, Minn., High Rails Thursday afternoon at the Superior Babe Ruth Field.

The game was halted after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Kavajecz fanned seven batters and walked two in his first start of the season.

The undefeated Spartans are 3-0 on the year, 2-0 in the conference.

The Superior pitcher lost his no-hit effort and shutout bid early when the Rails took a 1-0 lead in the second frame.

Proctor's Jeff Buetow doubled and scored on an error.

Senior High tied the game in the same frame.

Chris Peck doubled sharply down the right field line and advanced to third base on Steve Arnovich's single. Peck tallied on Rick Rivord's sacrifice fly to deep left field.

In the Spartan third inning, Jeff Arnovich reached first base on Proctor shortstop Matt Koski's error and, with two outs, went to third base as Cory Johnson gained life on Rail miscues. Peck tallied Jeff Arnovich on a single to right field.

In the fourth-inning avalanche, the Spartans rapped seven hits, including doubles by Jason Hurin, which scored two tallies, and Steve Kidd, which added another score.

Rivord slammed two hits in the inning, including a two-run single which hit the centerfield fence, and Cory and Craig Johnson and Jeff Arnovich all added safeties.

Cory Johnson ended the game with the two-run homer over the left field wall. It was his third round-tripper in three games and also scored Hurin, who had singled.

Senior High has slugged seven home runs this year.

Superior produced 12 hits with Hurin, Cory Johnson, Peck, and Rivord getting two each.

"I was pleased with our overall play, especially in the hitting department. We made a few throwing errors. I am concerned about it, but it may be due to sore arms among the infielders. Our hitting off-set a lot of these problems.

"Kavajecz threw very well. His change of speeds kept the Proctor batters in check," SSHS Coach Ron Orlandi said.

The Spartans were back in conference action against the Duluth East High Greyhounds Friday afternoon at the Superior Babe Ruth Field.
