Rails tip Spartans, 4-3

PROCTOR, Minn. -- The co-defending champion Superior Senior High Spartans wasted little time this year delving into the "meat" of their Lake Superior Conference schedule.

Senior High, along with the co-defending champion Duluth Denfeld High Hunters and the Duluth East High Greyhounds and Proctor, Minn. High Rails, are considered by SSHS Coach Steve Olson to have the best shot at the 1990 championship.

And it hasn't been all peaches and cream for the 1-1 Superior nine.

After disposing of Duluth Central, 7-5, at home, the Spartans bowed by a 4-3 margin Thursday afternoon at Proctor.

SSHS may have gone from the frying pan into the fire when it entertained East Friday afternoon at the Superior Babe Ruth Field.

Rail Scott Rohweder delivered a two-out single to center field to plate Troy Warren  with the winning run in the seventh inning.

Proctor opened the last inning with walks to Craig Vanneste and Warren. Superior switched to a five-man infield and almost got out of the jam on one pitch. With a two-two count and Proctor running, Superior pitcher Wayne DeGraef fanned Derek Parendo. Then Spartan catcher Eric D. Smith threw out Vanneste at third base and Senior High left fielder Eric King, covering third base, threw to second base and barely missed getting Warren.

Gary Amendola was walked intentionally before Rohweder stroked the game-winning hit.

Superior placed runners on second and third bases with two outs in the seventh inning. An interference call on Eric D. Smith in regard to Proctor catcher Brian Peterson retired the side.

"It was a judgement call by the umpire. The play didn't beat us. Our inability to hit at the right time beat us," Olson said.

"DeGraef did an outstanding job on the mound. It was his first varsity start and gave him confidence," he added.

Superior outhit Proctor, 10-4, but Rails pitcher Chris Nylund had the Spartans under control with his mixture of fastballs and curves. He fanned 16 batters. Superior stranded 10 runners in scoring position. The Spartans were caught looking eight times on the 16 strikeouts.

It became an uphill battle for SSHS after Proctor tallied twice in the first inning. SSHS had gone down stranding King and Arnovich, who had singled. Amendola and Rohweder walked and scored on Peterson's single as SSHS center fielder  Tom Belanger threw to the wrong base.

Arnovich singled in the third innng, stole second and third bases, and scored on an error.

Eric D. Smith singled in the fourth inning. Pinch-runner Kyle Massey ended up on third base on a two-base error and scored on a single by King.

Peterson singled in the Proctor fourth, stole second base and talled on Brian Zuck's single.

In SSHS's fifth frame, Arnovich singled for his third hit of the game, stole second base and took third on an error. He scored when Jon DeRoo, pinch-running for walking Brian Sweeney, was caught off first base.

Superior had two more base runners in the sixth inning, but couldn't score.

Sean Pitoscia was scheduled to pitch for Superior against East.

The Senior High junior varsity drubbed Proctor, 10-0, in five innings and faces East following the 4:30 p.m. varsity game.
