Rails carve out first baseball win

Team has split results for week

The Proctor baseball team showed a ray of light, as they traveled to Ely last week.

The team played a rock solid game against the T-wolves.

The Rails scored first with a single run in the top half of the first inning.

Kyle Wojtysiak led off with a well-placed base hit to center field. Unfortunately, he was gunned down by the catcher with a throw to the shortstop covering third base.

Next up was catcher Seth Reinke, who reached first base on an error by the Ely pitcher. A hard hit double by Jake Comnick moved Reinke to third base before he raced home on a grounder by Ryan Vanderscheuren, who picked up the RBI for the 1-0 Rails' lead.

Ely answered back in the bottom half of the first inning to not only tie the score, but to move ahead by one run.

The Wolves lead-off batter was given a free pass with a walk by the Rails' starting pitcher Dan Carlson.

An error led to the third batter reaching base and ultimately scoring run number two of the inning.

From the second through the seventh innings Ely scored one more run in the fifth to make the score 3-1.

Then came the top of the seventh inning. Proctor was at bat, with Scott Lustig up as lead-off batter. An error by the Ely third baseman saw Jesse Frick reaching first base and Lustig wheeling to third.

A sacrifice by Wojtysiak drove Lustig home to close to within a single run. Reinke drove in the tying run.

Comnick belted a double to left field to put the go-ahead runner in scoring position.

Comnick was left stranded on base, as the Ely defense toughened-up to record the final two outs.

The game was forced into extra innings. It was there that Ely squeaked out the win in the bottom of the ninth, 4-3.

Carlson took the loss after going a full eight innings. Wojtysiak checked in mid-way through the ninth.
