Baseball team clobbered by Grand Rapids, top Central

Grand Rapids baseball came to town looking for a team to beat. By the time the Thunderhawks headed back up Highway 2 the team they pummeled was the Proctor Rails, who fell to the always powerful Rapids team 10-0.

...[Dan Carlson took the loss.]...

The bottom of the first looked positive for the Rails. Proctor did get three batters on base. Unfortunately, two of those were taken out of the picture on fielder's choices. The third out came in the form of a strikeout.

That was the only threat the Rails mounted until the sixth inning.

The pounding did not begin until the top of the second, when the Thunderhawks pushed two runs across the plate before Proctor ended the inning with three outs.

Grand Rapids plated three more runs in the third for the 5-0 lead.

Proctor went down in order in the third, fourth and fifth innings. The Rails' bats would not come alive against the more veteran Thunderhawks' pitching and defensive play.

In credit to the Rails' defense, Grand Rapids was pushed the full seven innings before the game was decided. Many games this season have seen Rapids stopping a team in five innings under the 10-run rule.

The back-breaker came in the seventh inning, when eight Thunderhawks came up to the plate and four runs came in to extend their lead to 10-0.
