Error help, hurt Rails baseball

Errors both helped and hurt the Rails' baseball team last week. Ten errors allowed Proctor to score 16 runs that included 13 unearned runs against Virginia. Five errors against Chisago Lakes hindered the Rails.

Rails 16 - Virginia 3

The Blue Devils were leading by a run at the end of the first inning. However, the game unraveled quickly Thurs., April 14.

The Rails pulled away in the top of the second inning, scoring six runs -- all of them with two outs -- on only three hits. Proctor went in front 3-1, when two runs scored on a misplayed ground ball and added two more when Chris Hansen ripped a 2-2 pitch from Kyle Roskoski down the right field line.

Virginia got two of those runs back in the bottom half of the third.

Proctor sent four men to the plate and scored two more runs to make it 8-3 in the top of the fifth inning. Virginia sent in their relief pitcher, but things didn't go any better for him. Four more runs came across, two of them on a throw that sailed high over first base, as the Rails took a 12-3 lead with still nobody out.

Virginia did force a couple of outs, and with the bases loaded, had an opportunity to escape without falling any further behind. But Dan Carlson scored on a wild pitch and Virginia gave up a walk to again load the bases.

Leadoff man Kyle Wojtysiak plated two more runs with a single to left, and Scott Lustig later came across with the final run to make it 16-3.

"This was a good game for us for our first win of the season. Virginia has traditionally been a strong team in our section and was in the Section finals a year ago. I was very pleased to see our guys hit the ball hard and run the bases aggressively all day for the big section victory," said [coach Tim] Rohweder.
