Rails' week has highs & lows

Proctor wanted to play Grand Rapids. The match, the Rails thought, would give them insight into their own team. They were not disappointed.

The Thunderhawks played inspiring ball to beat Proctor 13-1 in five innings with eight of the runs coming in the first inning.

"Grand Rapids showed why it was undefeated and one of the best teams in the state in the first inning," Coach Tim Rohweder said. "I was proud of our guys for regrouping and putting together four strong innings even though we knew the game was probably out of reach. We schedule teams like Rapids to give us some information about our weaknesses as a team because they are sure to expose them through the course of a game. Hopefully, we can heal our wounds and grow into a more complete team from this game."

Kyle Wojtysiak had 2-for-3 with a lead-off double in the first inning.

Blake Reinke threw four strong innings of pitching in relief of Paul Michelizzi.

The Rails were able to get four hits off of freshman T'Hawks' pitcher Gabe White. It was his first win.

Grand Rapids Herald-Review, May 4, 2005

The Grand Rapids High School baseball team improved to 11-0 on the season with a pair of home wins in recent action.

The Thunderhawks defeated Duluth Denfeld 10-0 in five innings on Monday and then defeated the Proctor Rails by the score of 13-1 Tuesday. ...

The Thunderhawks remained undefeated with a 13-1 pasting of Proctor in action Tuesday in Grand Rapids.

Grand Rapids ended this game early as it scored eight runs in the first inning and never looked back.

Freshman Gabe Wood made his first varsity appearance a memorable one as he hurled a four-hitter to pick up his first varsity victory. He struck out four and did not issue a walk. The run against him was unearned.

"It was a good outing for a freshman making his first varsity start," said [Coach Bill] Kinnunen. "It also was his first varsity appearance."

Brett Hedlund had three hits with a double and drove in two runs and he scored two more. Austun Tavis ripped a home run while Micah Hovet had a two-run triple.

"We kind of lost our intensity after we scored the eight runs in the first inning," Kinnunen said. "We came into the game with three straight games without an error, but we lost the intensity and allowed a run and made some errors. We need to learn to keep that intensity all the way through a game."
