Spartans' win streak stopped at 10 by Rails

PROCTOR -- The Superior High School baseball team's 10-game winning streak came to an abrupt end with a 11-1 six-inning loss to the Proctor Rails Tuesday evening at Terry Egerdahl Memorial Field.

After losing their opening game of the season 10-0 to Duluth Denfeld, Superor (10-2) used key hitting, great pitching and stellar defense to win its next 10 games.

The Spartans got none of the above Tuesday night as they committed a handful of errors and managed just six hits while Proctor banged out 12, including four doubles.

Kyle Wilander started on the mound for Superior, allowing eight runs (four earned) with two strikeouts and six walks. Jordan McDonald pitched the final two innings, allowing three runs on six hits and two strikeouts.

Ian Scherber, Proctor's No. 9 batter, went 3-for-3 with two doubles and three RBIs. Ryan McCarthy doubled twice and knocked in two runs, Tyler Pionk singled twice and had an RBI, Justin Scanlon and Pat Everson each singled twice, Reed Olson singled once and Alex Oachs had a RBI ground out.

Oachs was also the winning pitcher, scattering six hits with six strikeouts and two walks.

Superior got two hits and an RBI from Taylor Olson, doubles from Grant Rindal and McDonald and singles from Dylan Ramage and Wilander.

The Spartans had chances to score runs, but stranded nine runners on base, including three in the second inning when they loaded the bases with one out.

Proctor took a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning as Pionk singled and eventually scored on a Scherber single.

The Rails took a 6-0 lead in the third inning with all five runs coming after two outs. A couple of errors helped extend the inning, which then set up McCarthy's RBI single and two-run doubles by Everson and Scherber.

After leaving two more runners on base in the third inning, the Spartans finally broke into the scoring column in the fourth when Wilander singled and Alex Meehan, who was running for Wilander, scored on Olson's infield single.

The Rails made it 9-1 in the bottom of the fourth, 10-1 in the fifth and then finished it in the sixth when Everson doubled and scored on Pionk's hit.

The Spartans, who are also 5-2 in the Lake Superior Conference, are back in action with a doubleheader at 4 p.m. Friday at Ashland.
