VIRGINIA, Minn. -- A seven-run second inning catapulted the Rails to victory over Virginia in a non-conference baseball game at Stock Field in Virginia. Proctor had six hits in the second inning, and the Rails also capitalized on three Virginia errors in the inning, which was punctuated by a two-run single by Ian Scherber that put Proctor ahead 8-0. The score remained the same until the bottom of the seventh inning.
 
Ben Nelson (1-0, 0.00 ERA) needed just 79 pitches thrown in seven innings to earn the complete game win. He allowed three unearned runs on five hits and one walk; he had three strikeouts. Nelson had shut out the Blue Devils through six-and-two-thirds innings before surrendering back-to-back home runs to Gavin Nichols and Tom Ostergaard in the bottom of the seventh inning.
 
Virginia's Patrick Anderson threw five-and-two-thirds scoreless innings in relief of starter Jeremy Paschke. Anderson allowed three hits and two walks with six strikeouts.
 
Justin Scanlon was three-for-four with a double and two RBIs for Proctor.
 
Nichols and Ostergaard had two hits apiece for Virginia.
 
Proctor (4-0) travels to Ashland on Tues., May 3, for a rescheduled game. The game will begin at 5:30 p.m. at LumberJack Field on the Northland College campus.
