PROCTOR -- Ben Nelson threw a no-hitter and Ryan McCarthy set a new PHS record with his ninth career home run as Proctor defeated ML-WR 12-0 in a non-conference baseball game Thursday at Proctor.
 
The Rails scored six runs in the bottom of the first inning on three hits, four walks, and two Rebels errors. Paul Hegstrom had a two-run single and Jake Malec walked with the bases loaded to account for Proctor's three RBIs in the inning.
 
McCarthy hit a two-run home run in the second inning. It was his second round-tripper of the season. It was also the 72nd hit of his career, which tied the PHS career hits record set by 2011 graduate Tyler Pionk.
 
Proctor added four runs on four hits, including a two-run triple by Jimmy Merling and an RBI double by Hegstrom, and a walk in the third inning.
 
Nelson (3-1, 1.21 ERA) allowed just three base runners in five innings. B.J. Young walked to lead off the first inning, Zach Paul reached on an error to start the second inning, and Young reached on an error with one out in the third. Nelson had six strikeouts and one walk. He threw just 59 pitches.
 
Losing pitcher Young allowed five earned runs on five hits, four walks, and a hit batsman in one inning. He faced three batters in the second inning before handing the ball over to reliever Brad Fossum. Fossum allowed three earned runs on five hits, one walk, and one hit batsman in three innings. He had three strikeouts.
 
Proctor scored 12 runs on 10 hits with two errors and five left on base.
 
ML-WR scored zero runs on zero hits with 3 errors and three left on base.
 
Proctor (6-3) hosts Superior next Tues. at 4:30 p.m., and ML-WR (2-3) is at Floodwood on Friday.
