Hibbing, Cloquet, East win in tournament

Hibbing, Cloquet, Duluth East and Brainerd won first-round games in the Northland high school baseball tournament Friday.

Winning pitcher Dwayne Walters allowed four hits and drove in two runs as Hibbing beat Duluth Denfeld 12-1 in Cloquet.

David Golden added two hits for Hibbing.

In a second game, Adam Dake and Jon Pettit combined to pitch a one-hitter and strike out 10 as Cloquet defeated St. Francis 6-0.

Dale Buytaert had four hits, including a double, to lead Cloquet. Fernando Amorim had two hits and Ryan Plante and Mike Wienen each had a double.

Host Proctor was beaten by Brainerd 23-20.

Jeff Imsand had three hits and scored four runs and Al Steir had two hits, including a two-run homer and two-run double, for Brainerd, which also got three hits from Seth Smart.

Chris Nylund had three hits for Proctor, including a grand slam. Scott McLeod also had three hits for the Rails, driving in three runs and scoring three.

Jay Milbridge homered and Jeremy Zeman and Cale Coughlan each had two hits as Duluth East handed Virginia its first loss of the season, 10-1, in Proctor.

Winning pitcher Joe Scherer allowed three hits in four innings before Jason Rozinka pitched the final three innings.

Tony Person had two hits for Virginia, 8-1.

In today's games, Proctor plays Virginia at 11 a.m. and Brainerd meets East at 1:30 p.m. in Proctor. Games in Cloquet have St. Francis meeting Denfeld at 11 a.m. and Cloquet playing Hibbing at 1:30 p.m.

The title game is 4:30 p.m. in Cloquet.
