The Grand Rapids [baseball team] swept two doubleheaders over the period to raise their record to 10-2 entering Tuesday night's game against the Greenway Raiders.

[Grand Rapids] swept a doubleheader from the Proctor Rails Friday at Legion Field. Grand Rapids manhandled the Rails 12-1 in five innings in the first game and then won a sloppy second game by the score of 9-8.

Grand Rapids traveled to Superior Monday to take on the Spartans, who entered the twinbill with a 9-1 mark. Grand Rapids had its bats booming as the[y] won the first game 21-7 and the second game 11-9.

Junior righthander Dan Winkler pitched a fine game in the first game against Proctor as he allowed five singles and didn't walk anybody. He struck out four while [Rapids] played errorless defense behind him.

Grand Rapids roughed up sophomore Proctor pitcher Scott McLeod for eight runs and 10 hits in 2 2/3 innings. Pitchers Brent Bordson and Brian Zuck finished the game for the Rails as [Rapids] accumulated 12 hits.

[Rapids] scored two runs in the first, six in the third and two more in the fourth to take a commanding 10-1 lead. Dave Kuschel had three hits and an RBI; Winkler had two hits; Troy Cusey had two hits including a triple and two RBI; Chris Krook had two RBI; Scott Lestico had a double and two RBI and Jamie Gilbert, Kelly Fairchild and Eric Trast added single RBI as everybody got into the offensive act.

In the second game, Grand Rapids blew an 8-2 lead after five innings as the Rails scored three runs on two hits and two errors in the sixth and three runs on one hit and three errors in the seventh. The two innings of miscues led to an 8-8 tie. However, Gilbert singled to drive in Winkler with the winning run in the bottom of the seventh as [Rapids] won 9-8.

[Rapids] committed five errors in the game and left 14 runners stranded on base. The[y] received 13 walks and had three batters hit by pitches.

Kelly Fairchild went the distance allowing seven hits. However, the ... errors hurt his performance. Fairchild struck out 10 and walked three.

Grand Rapids rocked Proctor starting pitcher Chris Nylund and reliever Matt Fietek for their 8-2 lead. Zuck took the loss for Proctor.

Winkler had one hit, scored three runs and had three stolen bases, Krook walked four times and scored three runs; Gilbert had two hits and three RBI, including the game-winner; Fairchild had two hits; Trast drove in two runs and Lestico drove in one.

McLeod drove in two runs for Proctor while Brian DeDominces scored three runs. ...
