The SSHS Baseball nine opened play in the Proctor Northland Tourney with a convincing 11-3  win over the host Proctor Rails. The game also served as a LSC contest and the Spartans ran their record to 2-1 on this young season. The Spartans will now face Cloquet at 11:00 a.m. in the tournament, a game which will also count towards LSC play.

After two scoreless innings Superior tallied a pair in the top of the third on singles by Craig Liebaert, Neil Anderson, and Tim Nelson with Liebaert and Anderson scoring on consecutive wild pitches.

Proctor knotted the score in the bottom half as they loaded the bases on two consecutive singles by Mike Davis and Scott Jenkins, and an infield hit by Derek Parendo. Brian DeDominces hit a sacrifice fly to deep center to score Davis. Jenkins advanced to third and Parendo got hung up in a rundown between second and first. Jenkins scored as Superior got caught without someone covering home on the rundown. Spartan hurler Mark Rengel, 1-0, got the next two batters to nip the Rails rally.

Superior scored one in their half of the fourth as Regel walked, Jason Strandberg ran for Rengel, stole second and scored on a two-out double by Nate Koch, the first of three doubles by Koch.

The Spartans scored five runs in the fifth as 10 batters went to the plate. With one out Brian Peck walked with Rick Warring entering as a courtesy runner. Warring stole second and advanced to third on a single by Doug Clark. Rengel doubled down the left field line scoring Warring and Clark. With two outs, Liebaert and Anderson drew walks to load the bases and Koch doubled to deep center clearing the bases, to give Superior a[n] 8-2 lead.

Proctor scored their third run in their half of the sixth as Brent Bordson reached on a throwing error and scored on two infield outs.

Superior made it 11-3 in the top half of the seventh. Warring singled to left with one out and advanced to third on Koch's double to center. Nelson walked to load the bases. Pinch hitter Casey Dombroski walked to force home Warring. Koch scored on a hot smash off the bat of Peck for the second out of the inning. Clark singled sharply to center for his third hit.

"We played aggressive baseball tonight. Regel threw the best game that I have seen him throw. We met the challenge and need to do so each game we play. We want the other teams to throw their best hurlers at us. It makes us all the more determined. Tomorrow's another day and Cloquet is always a nemesis. Nelson or Koch will be on the mound for us and we'll have to be ready," commented Head Coach Steve Olson.
