The launching pad, more commonly known as the Superior Babe Ruth Park, proved to be what the doctor ordered Thursday afternoon for the Proctor Rails as they blew into town and when the dust settled, headed back toward sunset with a convincing 13-5 pasting of the hometown Superior Spartans. The loss puts the Spartans a 6-2 in the LSC and forces them to win their remaining games against East and Hermantown and hope for someone else to beat the Greyhounds if they are to repeat as LSC champions.

Things looked as if they would go the way of Superior early on. A three-run first inning powered by a single by Craig Liebaert, a two-run home run to left from George Hansen, and a solo home run deep to center by Josh Edwards staked the Spartans to an early 3-0 lead.

The Rails got right back into the thick of things in the third and sent a message that they were ready to take on Superior. Erick Lundgren and Brian DeDominces both singled and Mike Davis followed with a home run to left to tie the score. Brent Bordson followed with a walk and eventually scored on an RBI single by Chris Watkins to give Proctor a 4-3 lead.

In the bottom half of the fourth the Spartans would tie the score at four. Ed Schultz singled with one out and moved to second on a single to left by Matt Ross. A wild pitch moved both runners up a base. Schultz then scored on an infield single to the right side off the bat of Mike Rehl but left Ross stranded at third to end the inning.

Proctor regained the lead in the fifth on an opposite-field home run that barely cleared the wall in left center off the bat of Kelly Hanna making the score 5-4 Rails.

The sixth inning was a disaster for Superior as Proctor sent 11 batters to the plate and all happy that the wind was blowing out. Pinch hitter Brian Towers opened the inning with a walk. DeDeminces singled sending Towers to third. DeDominces stole second and the Spartans opted to walk Davis to load the bases. Bordson hit a one-ball-two-strike count over the right-center field wall just out of the reach of Mike Stewart for a grand slam home run. Four more runs would eventually come across the plate for the Rails as Hanna and Josh Schubitzke added RBI singles along with a passed ball and a wild pitch to plate the other two runs to stake Proctor to a 13-4 lead.

The Spartans' Scott Pink hit a solo home run to right in the bottom of the seventh to round out the scoring for both teams.

Jamey Johnson, Hansen and Arun Ramesh all worked on the hill for Superior with Hansen taking the loss. He is now 3-2 on the year.

Proctor hurler Anthony Bush pitched six innings giving up nine hits, but kept Superior at bay with a good breaking ball. Cory Ward pitched the seventh for the Rails.

The junior varsity made quick work of the Rails in a five-inning 10-0 whitewashing to even their record at 5-5-1.

It's back to LSC action Monday as the Spartans host the Greyhounds of Duluth East at 4:30 p.m.
