Grand Rapids Herald-Review, May 23, 1993

The Grand Rapids [baseball team] used a three-run fourth inning rally and a strong pitching performance from Brian Simonson to defeat the Proctor Rails 4-2 in high school baseball action Friday at Legion Field, Grand Rapids.

[Grand Rapids] used three consecutive doubles in the fourth inning to score three runs and added a single run in the fifth for the 4-2 win.

Meanwhile, Simonson turned in a fine performance on the mound for [Rapids] as he pitched the distance and scattered four hits. He issued just one walk in the game while striking out nine hitters.

Simonson and Proctor pitcher Scott McLeod each held the opposing teams scoreless through the first three innings. However, the Grand Rapids bats came alive in the fourth as [their] hitters ripped three consecutive shots in the outfield gaps. Graham Geisler, who had three of Grand Rapids' eight hits in the game, led off the inning with a double and Sean Burggraf followed Geisler with a double in exactly the same spot as Geisler scored the first run of the game. Jon Cleveland followed with a rocket that hit high off the left field fence for another double as Burggraf scored. Simonson drove in what eventually turned out to be the winning run when his sacrifice fly plated Cleveland.

Proctor got on the scoreboard in the fifth inning when Mike Davis ripped a leadoff home run to cut the Rapids lead to 3-1.

Grand Rapids added an insurance run in the fifth as Joe Washburn singled to lead off the inning, advanced on a Proctor error and scored on a Geisler single off Proctor relief pitcher Anthony Bush.

Proctor tried to mount a rally in the seventh inning and managed to score one run before Simonson shut the door. Davis singled with one out, Brian Towers walked and Scott Jenkins reached on an error to load the bases with one out. However, Simonson got the next two hitters out while allowing one run as Rapids held on for the win. ...
