Superior Nine In Opening Triumph
The Evening Telegram, April 18, 1966

The Superior Senior High Spartans got their first taste of baseball action this spring and swallowed a sweet 3-1 win over the Proctor High Rails Saturday afternoon at the Superior Babe Ruth Field.

The Spartans of Coach Ron Orlandi whipped up a three-run rally in the fifth inning before Proctor notched its lone tally in the sixth frame.

Pitching was stronger than hitting and fielding as each team collected just two hits. Errors and walks played prominent roles in the scoring.

Superior used a pair of hurlers with Jeff Crisp going the first five innings and George Koskovich the other two. Crisp fanned 12 men and walked four. Koskovich had three fannings and gave up one base on balls.

Superior obtained their runs as Jerry Srur reached first base on an error. He was sacrificed to second by Bruce Hammerbeck. The veteran Ray Nygaard authored a double to drive home Srur. A passed ball and an error later tallied Nygaard and Dick Raymond, who had reached first base on a walk.

Jeff Finn delivered the only other Superior hit, a single in the fourth frame.

Rick Johnson hurled creditable ball while going the distance for the Proctor nine.

Frank Malec and Rick Goerts, a pinch-hitter, combined their safeties in the sixth frame when the Rails scored their lone run.

The Spartans return to action with a pair of games this week. Superior will play Duluth Denfeld twice in Thursday and Friday games. Both contests are set for 4 p.m. at the Superior Babe Ruth Field.
