Amid struggles baseball picks up first win

Proctor's baseball game against Duluth East was to be their home opener until a wet field forced the game to Ordean Field.

Though this game was billed as a Proctor home game, whatever home field advantage there was had been lost by the move. East fans were more noticiable than Proctorites.

Dul. East 12, Proctor 6

Proctor ended up under the gun right from the start, when East pounded in three runs in the top of the first inning to grab the quick 3-0 lead.

On the mound for East was Josh Gow, one of the most highly touted pitchers in the region. However, Proctor batters did prove to themselves they could hit off this much talked-about hurler, as they drove in a run in the bottom of the second inning.

East countered that with two more runs in the third, to extend the Greyhounds' lead to 5-1.

Proctor punched in five runs to one scored by East to knot the score at 6-6 heading into the top of the sixth inning. It was the bottom of the fifth when the Rails' bats came to life to score four runs.

Both teams were facing a new game as action headed into the sixth inning.

The Rails' rally could have easily put them in the lead, had the offensive attack been able to keep things going. After the fourth Proctor run cracked the scoreboard the home crew found themselves with bases loaded and just one out. Unfortunately, East gunned down two straight batters to end the inning without any other scoring.

A frustrated Proctor coach Tim Rohweder said following the game, "This was a classic example of our team playing to out potential when we think we can. We faced one of the best pitchers in the area and we drove him out of the game."

East went on to score six unanswered runs before the end of the game to log the 12-6 victory.

Leading the Rails offensively was Kyle Wojtysiak, who went one-for-four at the plate, drove in two runs, and crossed home plate himself. Dan Carlson had two hits in three trips to the plate, and crossed home plate three times. Ryan Vanderscheuren had one hit in three trips to the plate, but that one hit drove in two runs.

Chris Hansen, who started the game on the mound for the Rails, took the loss...
