SSHS Nine Dumped by Proctor, 8-6
Superior Telegram, May 18, 1983

The Superior Senior High's slumping Spartans rallied for three runs in the last inning, but it wasn't enough as Proctor, Minn. High's lowly Rails took an 8-6 baseball win Tuesday afternoon at the Superior Babe Ruth Field.

The setback, SSHS's fourth in a row, dropped the Spartans  to 6-5 this year while Proctor chalked up its second victory against nine losses.

Trailing by 8-3 entering the bottom of the seventh inning, SSHS's Pat Erickson, pinch-hitting for Brian Archanbault, and Mark Nodness singled. Tom Bourgeois walked to load the bases. Dan Archambeau's groundout scored Erickson and advanced Nordness and Bourgeois to third and second bases respectively. Paul Gidley's double plated both runners.

Proctor had scored three tallied in the top of the seventh. Scott St. Germaine had the only hit and there were two walks, a wild pitch, a stolen base, and two SSHS errors involved. The key was Nordness' dropping of a fly ball in right field with the bases loaded, which scored two runs.

In the Spartan first inning, Borgeois singled, stole second base, and scored on Gidley's single. In the SSHS fourth frame, Brad Homich's double scored Archambeau, who had singled. Homich scored on an error.

The Rails posted four runs in the third inning and one in the fifth.

Superior outhit Proctor, 8-4, but walks and six errors proved costly to the Spartans.

Proctor pitcher Gary Barby went the route for the winners, fanning two batters and walking three. Superior sophomore Tom Beattie pitched the first two and 2/3 innings and Kevin LaJoie [went] the rest of the way. Beattie, now 2-1, allowed three hits and LaJoie one. Both pitchers walked four and struck out the same number.

The Spartans were back in action Wednesday against the Two Harbors, Minn High Agates at the Superior Babe Ruth Field. Junior Gidley, 3-2, was slated to pitch for the SSHS nine.
