Rapids tops Proctor; Superior nips Central

GRAND RAPIDS -- Steve Anderson and Dave Mattson pitched defending state Class AA champion Grand Rapids to a sweep of Proctor Thursday in a high school baseball double-header.

Kevin Yelle scored on a throwing error at third base in the bottom of the seventh inning to lift ... [Rapids] to a 3-2 win in the second game. Mattson pitched a four-hitter for the victory; Chris Kindgren held ... [Rapids] to four hits, but a double steal on the first pitch off reliever Lee Stephenson in the seventh inning set up the final scoring play. A lead-off home run by Jeff Erikson* in the fifth inning gave the Rails a brief 2-1 lead.

Anderson held the Rails to six hits for an 8-6 win in the opener. Craig Alreck had two doubles and four RBI for...[Rapids], 5-3. Stephenson and Mark Kieren each hit two-run homers for Proctor.

*A home run by Mark Kieren was incorrectly attributed to Jeff Erikson in the newspaper.
