Chris Vendela, a senior right-handed pitcher, threw a no-hitter against the Proctor Rails Tuesday at the Morrie Arnovich Field in Superior. Vendela, in his complete-game effort, struck out 11 batters and walked five. His only shaky inning was the fifth when he recorded three of his walks and threw a wild pitch allowing the lone Proctor run.

In the meantime the Spartans' bats came to life somewhat as they banged out 10 hits off of two Rails pitchers. Paul Hadley led the way with a 3-for-3 performance and was aided by Nate Cockerham and Jason Sigfrids who collected two hits apiece.

"Coach Fregin and I challenged all of our pitchers after Monday's game at Two Harbors. We basically told them that each time they take the mound they need to be in charge, to challenge the hitters, to do what Coach Fregin has taught them. Vendela's efforts are a complete turn-around from his first performance. Needless to say we are 'happier than a pig in the mud' (a phrase from Coach Orlandi) in his performance," commented Spartans Head Coach Steve Olson.

The Spartans sent nine men to the plate in the second inning and ended up scoring three runs. Sigfrids opened the inning with a single to center. Justin Craker was hit by a pitch, and Matt LaValley followed with a sacrifice bunt which went for an error allowing Sigfrids to score from second. Pat Davy's high chopper to third scored Craker and Hadley's single to right-center plated LaValley.

In Superior's fourth, Hadley stroked a one-out double to left-center and scored on an RBI single to right-center by Cockerham for a 4-0 lead. Superior added two more runs in the fifth as Tom Pink lined a single to left-center followed by Sigfrids' single to left and Craker's infield bunt single loaded the bases. LaValley stroked an RBI single plating Pink and both Sigfrids and Craker moved to third and second on the play and eventually scored on Hadley's third hit of the game. ...
