Proctor creeps past Superior
Duluth News Tribune, May 14, 1981

Wild throws nullified Todd Cooke's three-hitter and allowed Proctor to sneak past Superior 3-1 in high school baseball Wednesday on the Spartans' field.
Superior, 9-3, struck first when Randy Gunderson rapped a solo home run in the second inning.
But Proctor pitcher Bill Richardson shut out the Spartans the rest of the way to finish with a five-hitter.
Jay Anderson, who reached on a two-base throwing error, tied the game in the third when he scored on Nik Peterson's sacrifice fly.
Dan Norton scored the winning run in the fourth. Norton reached on an error, stole second and scored on an error at the plate after Chuck Flynn's single. Flynn advanced to third on the error and scored on a wild pitch.

Erring Spartans Bow to Rails, 3-1
Superior Telegram, May 14, 1981

The Superior Senior High baseball team found out again Wednesday that it can't make mistakes against a good opponent and survive.

Plagued by four errors, the Spartans bowed to the undefeated Proctor High Rails, 3-1, at the Superior Babe Ruth Field.

Superior grabbed a 1-0 lead in the second inning on Randy Gunderson's leadoff homer and outhit Proctor, 5-3, but miscues played the key role as the Rails managed a run in the third frame and two more in the fourth for their 12th trimuph of the season.

SSHS dropped to 9-3 on the year with junior righthander Todd Cooke, who pitched well enough to win, sustaining his second setback of the season. He has four wins. He fanned four batters and walks the same number.

Righthander Bill Richardson of Proctor fanned eight batters and walked three. He was pulled out of a sixth inning jam on a double play that eliminated two Spartans from scoring position.

In Proctor's third inning, Jay Anderson found himself on second base as the result of a two-base throwing error by Mike Strum, SSHS third baseman. He took third base on a passed ball and scored on Nik Peterson's sacrifice fly.

In the following frame, Dan Norton reached first base on Strum's throwing miscue, stole second, and came plateward on Chuck Flynn's single. On the play, errors were charged to Strum and catcher Pat O'Brien, allowing Flynn to take third base. He scored on a wild pitch.

Superior was charged with four errors while Proctor had one.

Gunderson had two of SSHS's five safeties.

The Spartans were back in action Thursday afternoon at Hermantown. Sophomore southpaw Mike Charbonneau, 1-1, was scheduled to pitch for the Spartans.

Superior veteran righthander Todd Mattson has a sore arm and is unable to pitch at this time, SSHS Coach Ron Orlandi reported.
